Are you one of many who sits at a desk for longer than 7.5 hours a day? Sitting might seem simple, but incorrect posture and spending the majority of your day sitting, can cause serious health issues in the long run. If your job makes this unavoidable, allow us to show you the importance of correct posture and highlight a few easy but effective ways to ensure you’re sitting safely at your desk to avoid bad back problems.
If your job means you can’t avoid sitting for 7.5 hours a day, you should at least be aware of how to sit correctly and how to prevent this unknown danger from causing long-term health issues. Follow these 3 steps for a more active day in the office that won’t ruin your body in the long run.
- Don’t sit unless totally necessary. Simple as that. It might sound trivial but you don’t always have to choose the chair. By actively telling yourself not to sit down, you’ll reduce the time you spend on your butt – for example waiting for your bus to arrive or choosing to stand to read your morning newspaper rather than perch on the breakfast bar stool.
- Every 30 minutes, move for 2 minutes. As sitting obviously creates physical inactivity, you should constantly move in between your ‘sitting sessions’. To what extent you move is up to you. Be it just walking around in the office to get a coffee, moving your arms and legs or doing 10 bodyweight air squats, this will positively affect your circulation system and keep your muscles and joints active.
- Check your posture as often as possible. When doing a workout, you always watch your technique right? Then it should be no different when it comes to daily movements such as sitting down or tying your shoelaces. Pay attention to your execution and posture. Correct your body position to a neutral spine, and sit safe.
Make it a habit that you constantly check and improve your posture and move whenever you can. Every day, remind yourself of reducing the time you spend sitting down. Don’t be average! Challenge the average 7.5 hours people sit, and give yourself more quality of life by doing so.
